Call for Papers 'Post-liberal forms of development in Latin America:
Beyond standard categories?'
With the electoral turn to the left in Latin America and the rise of
various post-liberal social movements (MST, indigenous movements etc), the
scene is set for the rethinking of the types of development that can be -
and are being - carried out. If we consider these transformations in
development as challenging in various ways, and through diverse means, the
premise of neoliberal development, we can perhaps characterise them as
post-liberal (cf. Yashar 2005). Development reforms associated with
left-aligned governments such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Brazil
have addressed such issues as food security, sovereignty over natural
resources, and social inclusion. How are these reforms faring, and to what
extent do they offer examples of alternatives to standard development? How
can geographers characterise and evaluate these projects? Another aspect to
consider is multiculturalism, an important influence on development
programmes and paradigms in the region. Yet previously multiculturalism
often went hand-in-hand with neoliberalism, so what is happening now to
measures to incorporate marginalised racial groups? The session aims to
assess current forms of development in the region, evaluate the
significance of current patterns and directions of development, and
position these transformations in the context of current trends in
development thinking and practice.
The following themes are indicative of potential foci:
- The practise of new forms of development
- The relationship between alternative modernities and development
- Development nationalisms
- Racialization, ethnicity and culture
- Contests between global macroeconomic goals and development
- Subaltern conceptions of development
